What is it about wine?

We love it, that much is true. No matter what your tastes, there’s likely some kind of wine out there that’s right for you. Whether you like adding fruit and sugar for sangria or selecting the perfect accompaniment to a filet mignon, there’s a wine for everybody, every food, and every situation.

But I will be the first to admit this: wine can be intimidating.

When I first met my husband, Charlie, I knew he was a chef, and I quickly learned he was also very into wine. Which was great for me, because I love to drink it! But with new love’s first blush also came the desire to impress, and I realized immediately that there’s no way I could keep up with Charlie in the wine department. I was a total novice! The best I could tell you was drink white wine with chicken and red with beef.

Charlie has since taught me so many things about wine, winemaking and wine drinking, but nothing more important than this:

Wine does not have to be intimidating! And you don’t need to be an expert to truly enjoy it.

Here at A Girl and her Somm, I’m going to give you advice from a regular person — me — on how to make the most out of your wine experiences. I’m translating the sound and expert advice my sommelier husband continues to give me, which has transformed the way I drink. And together we’re going to learn what you need to know to be more confident in choosing a bottle and really enjoying what’s inside.

Occasionally Charlie will weigh in with some more in-depth, geek-out stuff. You can find that under the tag “rabbit hole.”

Otherwise, stay tuned in for all sorts of wine-drinking advice for regular people.

Here’s to becoming better wine drinkers!
